DRY STONE WALLING

Andre
I am a professional member of the Dry Stone Walling Association & on the register of
Dry Stone Wallers who hold certificates in Dry Stone Walling.
I started Dry Stone Walling as a hobby over 20years ago after watching wallers at various
shows & having a dry stone wall built at my house.

I began to build & create features in my garden with the local sandstones that was left by
the previous owner. My hobby grew & grew alongside working in my main job.
After building a few freestanding dry stone walls, I went to do my training with the
Dry Stone Walling Association in Crooklands, Cumbria. I started with several taster days,
building walls in farmers fields & repairing gaps in walls with a team of wallers.
The Lantra training is the Leading awarding body for land-based & environmental training.
I obtained my Lantra Level 1 & 2 Certificates in Dry Stone Walling.
The DSWA has a Code of Practice, and members adhere to the standards & rules of the association.

There are regional variations, but all walling work takes into consideration the type, stone
& style of other Dry Stone Walls nearby.
We use local materials, in-keeping with the landscape.
Dry Stone Walls are environment friendly. They provide habitat for flora & wildlife
& a safe route for living creatures.
They are used for boundaries of gardens, houses, farm fields & yards, outdoor buildings, enclosures
for animals, entrances for drives/pathways & retaining walls.
Dry Stone Walls are decorative & attractive to look at. Walling is a traditional craft which has been around for thousands of years; dry stone walls are very durable and need no regular maintenance.
The Copings or Toppers provide different outlooks & styles, they can be flat, sloping, half moon,
square, pointed etc.
I have built a variety of Dry Stone Walls -freestanding & retaining, curved & land sloping walls, pillars, gated entrances,& Cheekends (which are a typical way to end a wall).
Also, I do wall restoration & repair gaps in walls which have collapsed or been damaged.
Many members of the Dry Stone Walling Associatiion engage in Charity work. I took part in the re-building
of boundary walls at Reeth, in Yorkshire after the floods in 2019.
“The longer you practise Dry Stone Walling the better you get.”
Dry Stone Walling is a traditional craft & work of art which enables wallers to create different styles.
